Woman In Business Series - Part 5 Katie Godfrey
The beauty industry was hit hard last year, but Katie Godfrey, owner of KG Salon remained positive and continued mentoring businesses and keeping spirits high throughout the most difficult year for many salon owners, beauty therapists, lash artists, hair dressers and so on.
Katie is inspirational and we recently had the pleasure of interviewing her as part of our Woman in Business Series.
Can you tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
Hey, My name is Katie Godfrey. I opened my beauty salon over 12 years ago when I was just 19 years old. Which was a huge step as I had left school at the age of 13 with no qualifications to my name due to bullying.
Since then I have built a multi award winning salon which has been published over 45 time’s including OK and Hello magazine and Nationwide newspapers. Won over 15 awards and also pampered celebrities.
I have had a chains of salons and built and sold salons across the UK.
I really wanted the highest of standards across salons and within the industry so I launched KG Professional. A beauty training academy across the UK and eyelash product range. Within 6 months of launching the product range almost 10 years ago, we hit over 500 salons and now sold all over the world.
I am also a dedicated business mentor and look after over 35 salons. Have conducted various talks at colleges and events about my story and is passionate about motivating others in building their careers. I am also a regular writer for many industry magazines and have a number 1 best selling book called 'Extraordinary Women’.
I am co-owner of “Salon Franchise” a consultancy company in the hair & beauty industry. Plus co-owner of “World Lash University” conference & awards which is partnered with “The Lash Games” at Olympia Beauty.
How do you help people?
I feel like I help people in many ways. From entering my salon helping clients feel confident and beautiful. Building up employee’s to be the best version of themselves and go on to helping them grow. Salon owners that are stuck in their salons and want more freedom, I help them step off the salon floor and grow there businesses. Plus also teach students all over the world beauty treatments to help them launch new careers or enhance their existing businesses.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Is there anyone in particular who inspires you?
I wouldn’t say there is anyone particular. I love to focus on myself and keep in my own lane. Sometimes to much as I don’t know what else is going on it the world. I love reading and listening to women powerhouses that are highly successful to listen to their journeys and get tips from them. Also social media you can get this information to help you stay inspired.
How do you plan your day?
I have to have routine. Even more so with a little girl, home and running many companies. If I didn’t have a routine I would be all over the show. I wake up early and have me time before the day starts! Yes I am that 5am club. I then wake my daughter up and we get ready for school and have breakfast together. We do the school run. Then every single day is different from here. I will either be at the salon, office, recording podcasts, in meetings, working with the businesses I mentor, teaching, planning ahead etc.
Everyday is so different, which is what I love. Then I will ALWAYS do the school run myself for 3pm. Have time with my daughter until her bed at 7pm and then I love to carry on working again. I normally do social media in the evenings.
What are your daily rituals?
Ohhhh I love this question. I always wake up early. Between 5am-6am. I will then always have a workout without fail. This really helps me wake up and get motivated. I will then shower and get ready so I don’t need to rush around once my little one wakes up.
Then everyday at some point I will do my gratitude list and affirmations. Me and my little girl also pray before bed and say what we are thankful for that day.
I love daily rituals that keep you positive and on track.
What are your business goals?
I have many goals and they are always changing and adding more. I would say for this year I want to grow the academy and launch more products and look after as many salon owners as I can.
What do you do to relax and switch off?
What is switching off? Haha. No I relax and switch off at the weekend. I am very none stop in the week and I love that. But by the time the weekend comes I am knackered. So I will switch on the TV and watch movies, get a takeaway. See friends and family.
I also love regular holidays. Normally we are on holiday every school holiday, so that is my time to relax.
How do you practice self-care?
By my morning routine. I will always get ready in the morning, even if I’m not doing anything. This makes me feel great straight away - and if you feel great you will perform great. I also am I great believer in eating the right foods and fuelling your body right, even more so because I am so busy. At night time I love a little pamper, give myself a facial and hair masks etc.
Do you have a favourite quote? Or mantra?
If it was easy everyone would do it.
I always remind myself that and others I mentor. Great to remember when things get tough as life as an Entrepreneur is a very up and down rollercoaster.
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to start their own business?
Make sure you have a passion for it. You need that passion to get you through the hard times and keep pushing through. Also don’t do it for the money. Yes we all want that and that's why we work, but do it for the people first. Serve others and the money will come.
